feb 26th: sex

[Please note, file is 1.4MB - but full of good stuff!]

Slightly altered format, more information and a bit easier to follow perhaps for anyone else browsing.

Also check out Mark Driscoll's Porn Again Christian, as discussed on the night. Whilst you may or may not agree or be interested in all of it, it's definitely worth a browse if not a full read (we all know it's a struggle!)

jan 12th: fear

d+d last Thursday was on fear: different again from previous outings, but meriting a bit of follow-up along two paths. First, here's the mindmap.

Firstly, as mentioned I had just started reading the phenom that is The Shack; now I've nearly finished I've revised my critique somewhat. Whilst appalling written (read: Americanised) in many places, Wm Paul Young makes an arguably brilliant stab at exploring three things: the trinitarian relationship between God's three persons as we understand them; the nature of eternal life and what God really wants for us; and, as a overarching basis for this, God's plan for leading us through fear and pain. It's a bit of a pain getting through the exposition, and the writing can be overtly saccharine on occasion, but overall I highly recommend giving it a bash.

Secondly, was confronted this morning by an eerily appropriate sermon entitled, "Light In The Darkness". Please click to NBC's podcast page and download 15th Feb's AM sermon! It's also on iTunes.

Below are my very brief notes, but I would encourage to take five minutes at some point and work through the references.

Light In The Darkness - Is. 50:10

- Read 1 John 2:2-14

- The church: All for one, and one for all?
Paul - if the eye is damaged, the whole eye should know.

- People who love God will often find themselves in the dark. How does someone move? What happens when darkness comes?

- Stop and Think: Who is my God? [1 Tim. 6: 13-16]

My God possesses wonderful characteristics!
- Omnipresence [Ps.139 7-12]
- Omniscience [Ps. 139:1-4]
- Omnipotent [Is. 40:21-26]

- SO Isaiah 50:10:
"Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the word of his servant? Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God."

What does this require us to do? Trust and really trust in God.

- Remember God's name; that is, all the names He is called by.
- Rely on God; really lean on him. (See Treasures in the Darkness (Pearls at a Great Price) by J.E. Tada.

Following on from the previous meet, we talked about finding solutions to the problems - specifically, righteousness, and what that actually means.
